Australia, fourth place at the previous edition in Tianjin, China two years ago and hot favourites in Group D, started aggressively in their opener against Hong Kong. Talented captain Benjamin Hardy, who had experienced six World Championship tournaments, methodically tore the Hong Kong's defence into shreds with his exceptional cross-court spikes to help a fired-up Australia clinch the first set 25-17.

Hong Kong changed several players in the second set to find the right formula in the tough match against the much stronger Australians, who already booked a berth to play in the next year's Japan-hosted World Championship. Still, the Aussies, whose height average is 200cm against the rivals-183cm, proved too much for the hapless Hong Kong to claim the one-sided set 25-12.

Their confidence sky-high after winning two sets successively, the powerful Australia fielded all substitute players in the third set. Taking a commanding 24-13 lead, Aussies allowed the less-skilled rivals one more point from Nathan Roberts's serving mistake before 205cm-tall David Ferguson spiked devastatingly to the midcourt to hand the Australians the third-set win 25-14.

After the match, Australian head coach Russell Borgeaud expressed his satisfaction over his team's glittering performance, but still admitted that an uphill task awaits his team in this tournament.

It is very happy that my team won the first match. It helped boost my team spirit. I think my players did a good job. However, Hong Kong also played a good match against us, particularly in the first set, where both sides played a hard-fought battle. This is a newly-formed Australian team mixed between veterans and young talents,Borgeaud commented.

The Philippines collected five points from two wins against one loss to finish second in Group D, while Uzbekistan came in third place with one win over Hong Kong on Thursday against two losses.

Uzbekistan on Thursday came from behind to beat Hong Kong 3-2 sets (28-30 18-25 25-16 25-17 15-9). Winless Hong Kong now have to take on the lacklustrous United Arab Emirates for the 17th-18th place play-off on Saturday. The UAE on Thursday suffered their third successive loss in the eight-day tournament to Japan, going down 16-25 23-25 22-25.
