Sassa sparks Brazil to comeback win

Brazil beat holders China 3-2 in the opening match of the women's World Grand Champions Cup at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Tuesday.

After losing the first two sets, Brazil came home 15-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-8.

Fittingly, Brazil's Welissa "Sassa" Gonzaga nailed the winning point on Brazil's first match point, as she had led the third-set comeback when all looked lost.

After a mistake-riddled opening, China surged from 12-12 to 18-12 thanks to a couple of stylish winners on the right from the elusive Zhang Ping, a service ace from Chu Jinling and some solid team blocking.

Brazil changed a couple of players and called a couple of time-outs, but China had built up a rhythm and their superior defence swept them to the first set 25-15.

Brazil regrouped during the break, and Jaqueline Carvalho and Sheilla Castro led the response with some blistering winners, but they could not match China's attacking momentum.

Li Juan, China's new recruit from Tianjin, was having a fine game, and the powerful Yang Hao entered the action in time to close out the second set 25-17.

Brazil needed to improve drastically, and did so during the third set, tightening up their block and varying their attack. "Sassa" began to find her range, as Brazil took the third 25-20.

In the fourth set, Fabiana Claudino was the dominant force at the net for Brazil, and setter Carolina Albuquerque clicked into gear with her spikers to unsettle the Chinese defence. On the first of their four set points, Caroline Gattaz showed her speed at the net to score the winner and take the set 25-20.

"Sassa" would have the final word in a fifth-set which Brazil dominated.

Americans rock China with straight-sets win

USA pulled off a major surprise by crushing holders China 3-0 in the first match on the second day of the World Grand Champions Cup at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Led by Chinese head coach Jenny Lang Ping, the Americans won 25-22, 25-23, 26-24, sealing a famous victory on their third match point.

USA carried on from where they left off against Korea the previous day, and won the first set 25-22.
With Nancy Metcalf dangerous on the flank, and Tayyiba Haneef so quick to mop up anything at the net, the Americans kept China on the defensive.

China's battery of big hitters were having problems piercing the mighty USA block, and it needed some subtle ball placement for China to keep in touch. The excellent Zhou Suhong lifted China's spirits with some confident winners, and the team began to click midway through the second set.

But they had no answer to the dynamic Metcalf, who found the gaps at regular intervals with her sharply-angled, left-handed spikes, and Haneef, who scored some big points in the closing stages of the second set. USA won it 25-23 on their third set point when Zhang Ping served wide, but it was a close call.

In the third set, China improved their block, and, behind some thunderous serves from Chu Jinling, reached the first TTO ahead by five at 8-3.

But the Americans, making fewer mistakes, especially on serve, closed the gap. On the third match point for the USA, China's Li Juan spiked wide to give America the third set 26-24.

China open their win account

Asian and Olympic champions China brushed aside Korea 3-0 in the first match on the third day of the women's World Grand Champions Cup at Nagoya Rainbow Hall on Friday afternoon.

The holders and world No. 1 recovered from two consecutive losses to Brazil and USA in Tokyo to outclass Korea 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 and record their first win. Korea, a wild card entry, slipped to 0-3.

It was clear from the opening exchanges that China, after two defeats in Tokyo, were in the mood third time out.

Setter and captain Feng Kun had all the time in the world to work her attack, and the points flowed from heavy hitters Chu Jinling and Li Juan, and from the more crafted play of Liu Yanan, Zhou Suhong and Zhang Ping.

The Koreans trailed by three at the first TTO and by four at the second, and the occasional breakthroughs by Kim Yeon-Koung and Han Song-Yi were never going to be enough.

On their second set point, China clinched the first frame 25-18 with a well-worked spike from Chu, Liaoning's lethal weapon, straight down the middle.

The second set continued in similar fashion, with rallies few and far between as the teams traded quick points.

China led 16-12 at the second TTO of the second set, and the Koreans called their second TO when the set began to slip away at 18-12.

Zhou brought up set point with a trademark running spike, and Chu did the rest to close out the second set 25-17.

Although China dominated the third set, the Koreans had not given up hope, and Han ended a long rally with a flashing winner from deep to score one of the most spectacular points of the match.
But there were just not enough of them from Korea, and China closed out the match 25-19.

China hold off Japan for second straight win

Holders China recorded their second straight victory on the fourth day of the women's World Grand Champions Cup at Nagoya Rainbow Hall on Saturday night, beating Japan 3-1.

After losing twice in Tokyo, the Olympic champions followed up their victory over Korea with a 25-15, 21-25, 25-15, 25-19 success against the host.

Chu Jinling was quick to make her mark again with some searing winners, and an unreturnable rocket serve took China to the second TTO with a comfortable seven-point cushion at 16-9.

Japan called their second TO trailing 21-12, but there was no saving the first set. China closed it out on their second set point 25-15 when Zhang Ping ran around setter Feng Kun and scored with a sharp, angled drive from the right.

With improved serve return and blocking, Japan were able to open up narrow leads in the second set, but each time China came back with some well-worked running spikes, notably from Liu Yanan.

At set point for Japan, some agile defence created the opportunity for Otomo to close out the second frame 25-21 and make it 1-1.

China cranked up the pace midway through the third set, and jumped from 7-6 to 12-6 with some crisp, high-velocity shooting. Power spiker Kana Oyama joined the action with Japan trailing 21-12, but she could not stop China taking the third set 25-15.

Kaoru Sugayama led Japan's fourth-set riposte, and there was only one point in it at the second TTO, with China ahead 16-15 and everything to play for.

China finished strongly, though, blocking and attacking, and pulled away to win 25-19.

China end on winning note

Deposed champions China beat Poland 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20) in the second match on the fifth day of the women's World Grand Champions Cup at Nagoya Rainbow Hall on Sunday.

Poland faded after a bright start, and finished with a 1-4 win-loss record, while China jumped to 3-2.

The Poles had certainly done their homework on the Chinese team, and there would be none of the free-flowing attacking which earned the Olympic champions victory over Japan the previous evening.

In contrast, Katarzyna Skowronska continued to impress for Poland. She appears to be transported on invisible wires from the roof as she sails through the air before spiking down the middle of the court.

Malgorzata Glinka brought up set point for Poland at 24-17 with a trademark kill on the left, and a rare mistake by her opposite number seven, Zhou Suhong, shooting into the net, gave Poland the first set 25-17.

China improved in the second set, leading 8-3 at the first TTO. Li Juan, who has joined the squad from the National Games-winning Tianjin team, kept the Polish defence busy.

China took a time-out, despite leading 17-11 in the second, and when that did not work, Li was replaced by power spiker Yang Hao.

But it was Zhang Ping who carried China to the second set 25-17 with her persistence and precision.

In the third set, a spectacular left-handed block on the run by Chu Jinling to deny Agata Mroz brought China to the second TTO ahead by two points, and they held six set points at 24-18. Li, rising high on the left, won it for them on their second attempt, 25-19.

China's attack started to function smoothly in the fourth set, as Liu Yanan and the excellent Zhou came more into play, but the blocking of Skowronska kept Poland close. Trailing 15-11, Poland sent in Euro MVP Dorota Swieniewicz to try and salvage the situation, but the Chinese scented victory and, with Chu on fire, went on to win 25-20 on their third match point.
