Italy romp past China in straight sets

Italy had far too much pace and power for China in the second match on the first day of the men's World Grand Champions Cup at Nagano Arena on Tuesday.

The world No. 2 outclassed the wild card entry 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-17) to begin their campaign for a second WGCC title in impressive style.

It was clear from the opening exchanges that China would have difficulty clearing Italy's high wall of blue blockers, and when another attacking error gave Italy a 10-6 lead, China called their first TO.

Alessandro Fei was proving to be a real handful for China, who needed a second TO as Italy started running away with the first set 14-8.

Yuan Zhi provided brief respite for China with a clean winner on the right, but there was little the Asians could do to stop the high-speed barrage of Italian points as the Azzurri won the first set 25-15.

It remained one-way traffic in the second set, as Luigi Mastrangelo devoured everything at the net and Fei continued to blaze away on the right.

A crafty spike from Chinese setter Li Chun from under the noses of the Italian blockers gave the European champions something to think about, but Italy still led by 10 at the second TTO and romped to the second set 25-15 with a down-the-middle smash from Luca Tencati.

China got into it more in the third set, and spiked confidently, but Italy lifted the pace at will and closed out the match 25-17 with a Matej Cernic flyer on the left.

Brazil wake up in the nick of time

World No. 1 Brazil were given a mighty fright by wild card entry China before winning their encounter 3-2 at Nagano Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

The reigning world and Olympic champions lost the first two sets 25-23, 28-26 before turning the tables to take the next three 25-11, 25-18, 15-10. Brazil improved to 2-0, while brave China dropped to 0-2.

Brazil started slowly, and China's Shen Qiong took them by surprise with some crashing early kills.

With Xie Wenhao impressive at the net, China held three set points at 24-21. Brazil saved two of them before Andre served into the net again to hand China the first set 25-23.

In the second set, a serve from Tang Miao that struck the top of the net and dropped over for the softest of aces highlighted the fact that the ball was just not running for Brazil, and a brilliant winner on the left from captain Sui Shengsheng increased their concern.

With all the errors, Brazil could not build any rhythm, and it was only the individual talent of Giba and Andre on the flanks, and in particular Gustavo Endres at the net, that kept the points coming.

Giba increased the tempo down the stretch with some soaring winners through the middle, but Brazil missed two set points before China took the second set 28-26 on their second set point with an ace from Tang.

In the third set, China could not maintain the pressure and made too many errors. Head coach Di Anhe called a TO when trailing 13-6, but Brazil had finally found some momentum, and a three-man block on Tang gave them a nine-point lead at the second TTO. The third set ended comfortably for Brazil 25-11 in only 18 minutes.

China's return of serve disintegrated at the start of the fourth set, and with a more coordinated block and smooth attack, Brazil quickly opened up a handsome lead. They closed out the fourth frame 25-18 with a Rodrigo Santana special at the net.

In the tiebreak, Brazil started strongly but were pegged back to 7-7 before surging to victory.

Egypt win first WGCC game for Africa

Egypt produced a proud victory for Africa in the first match on the third day of the men's World Grand Champions Cup at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Friday.

The African champions beat China 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-12) to record the continent's first victory in the fourth edition of the inter-continental championship.

The Egyptians, ranked 21st in the world, were much more aggressive at the start than the 18th-ranked Chinese, who looked nervous and were slow to get going.

Ahmed Abd Elnaeim was quickly into his groove, knocking over Shen Qiong with a trademark left-handed fireball, and Hossam Shaarawy asserted himself at the net.

A block by Mohamed Elnafrawy on Chinese captain Sui Shengsheng, followed by an impressive left-wing spike from Hamdy Awad, took Egypt to the second TTO ahead by three, but China struck back with some effortless kills from Tang Miao.

Assisted by Xie Wenhao, China closed right up to 22-22, before Egypt pulled away to win 25-23.

In the second set, a bullet serve from Abdallah Ahmed whistled past libero Chu Hui, prompting a Chinese TO, and Saleh Youssef brought up the second TTO with Egypt holding a two-point advantage.

But Tang continued to score freely for China, who moved ahead 21-20 to force an Egypt TO. A Sui block on Elnaeim and another elegant right-wing winner from Tang carried China to the second set 25-21 to make it 1-1.

Shen's attacking talents flourished in the third set, and a soaring winner down the middle put his team up 14-8 and brought an Egypt TO. From 20-15, China closed out the third 25-21 with a Shen spike on the left.

Elnaeim started to fire for Egypt in the fourth, and they opened up a handsome early lead with some effective blocking.

Ossama Bekheit was also prominent for Egypt, and some slick net work from Elnafrawy took them to the second TTO ahead by five. Despite a few attacking errors, they won the fourth set 25-21.

In the tiebreak, Egypt, blocking well, led 8-5 at the turnaround and won 15-12.

Japan hold on to win Asian marathon

Japan beat regional rivals China 3-2 in the third match on the fourth day of the men's World Grand Champions Cup at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Saturday night.

Japan came home 15-8 in the tiebreak after the first four sets had been shared. Japan's 25-14, 24-26, 25-20, 35-37, 15-8 success lifted them to 2-2, while dropping China to 0-4.

In the first set, Japan came home comfortably 25-14, helped by six points from crowd favourite Yu Koshikawa and five from evergreen captain Masaji Ogino. Tang Miao replied with four for China.

As expected, the match between these fierce regional rivals was played at a fast pace, and this did not relent in the second set as they were locked at 11-11.

The quality of the Chinese serve threw Japan off course, though, and, at 23-23 in a scrappy second set, Tang rose on the right to bring up set point for China, only for Shen Qiong to serve wildly. On China's second set point, Tang finished the job 26-24 to make it 1-1.

As Japan put some daylight between themselves and China late in the third, China called two TOs in quick succession to try and cut out the mistakes. From 20-16, Japan stuttered but eventually came through 25-20 thanks to some power spiking and serving from a fired-up Koshikawa.

China jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the fourth, but, with Nobuharu Saito and Kota Yamamura impressive at the net, Japan pulled back.

In an incredible end to the fourth set, Japan missed six match points before China clinched it 37-35 on their seventh set point. The fourth set lasted 35 minutes.

Japan turned around 8-3 ahead in the tiebreak, aided by some Koshikawa rockets, but Tang, who had scored 28 points in the first four sets, still had not finished his spiking master class.

Japan finally won 15-8 on their second match point of the tiebreaker.

Americans finish in style

USA beat China in straight sets in the first game on the last day of the men's World Grand Champions Cup at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Sunday.

The Norceca champions and world No. 5 won 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 against the wild card entry to finish their campaign with a 4-1 win-loss record. China, ranked 18th, dropped to 0-5, but lost three of those in five sets.

The Americans started as they intended to go on. Behind some blistering serves from Clayton Stanley, they were able to pick off early points, and led 5-0 and 8-3. Ryan Millar was in commanding and aggressive form at the net, and setter Donald Suxho joined in the fun with a slick play.

When China attacked, the American block was its usual efficient self, but points machine Tang Miao lifted his team's spirits by spiking through three defenders to put China on the board. Setter Li Chun gave the USA a taste of their own medicine with a crafty score at the net, followed by a sizzling ace, and Xie Wenhao and Yu Dawei both produced sharp winners.

But with Stanley and Riley Salmon scoring five points apiece, USA strolled to the opening frame 25-16.

In the second set, China found their rhythm. Zhang Chen helped out the prolific Tang and captain Sui Shengsheng on offence, and they made USA work much harder for their points.

But the Americans had too much firepower and individual quality, and were able to step it up down the stretch. Stanley, soaring imperiously on the right, brought up set point, and Phillip Eatherton smashed home the decisive point, 25-21.

In the third set, USA pulled away to lead 16-11 at the second TTO. Restored to the action, China's Shen Qiong gave the American defence plenty to think about, but victory was in sight for the Americans and they settled it 25-18.
